The Mark of Zorro by Johnston McCulley is the original tale of the legendary masked hero known as Zorro. First published in 1919 under the title “The Curse of Capistrano,” it was later renamed “The Mark of Zorro.” This iconic story is set in Spanish California and follows the adventures of Zorro, whose true identity is Don Diego de la Vega, a wealthy landowner who secretly defends the oppressed and fights against injustice.

Zorro, which means “Fox” in Spanish, is known for his cunning, bravery, and trademark Z-shaped mark left behind as a symbol of his fight for justice. The character has been immortalized in numerous films over the decades, including the 1920 silent film starring Douglas Fairbanks, the 1940 adaptation featuring Tyrone Power, and the 1958 and 1959 series with Guy Williams. The character was also portrayed by Frank Langella in the 1974 film, by Antonio Banderas in the 1998 and 2005 films, and by Alain Delon in the 1975 European production.
