Martin Chuzzlewit

Author: Charles Dickens

Synopsis:

Martin Chuzzlewit follows the story of a young architect who finds himself in dire straits after being dismissed by his mentor, Seth Pecksniff, and disinherited by his eccentric, wealthy grandfather. Determined to make his own way, Martin, accompanied by the optimistic servant Mark Tapley, embarks on a journey to the United States. However, their American adventure is fraught with misfortune, including being swindled by land speculators and enduring other troublesome yet occasionally humorous encounters. Disillusioned with life in the New World, Martin returns to England. Humbled by his experiences, he reconciles with his grandfather, who ultimately approves of Martin’s marriage to his beloved, Mary Graham.
