Bleak House

Author: Charles Dickens

Synopsis:

Widely considered Dickens’s masterpiece, Bleak House revolves around the generations-long lawsuit of Jarndyce and Jarndyce, a case through which “whole families have inherited legendary hatreds.”

The novel follows Esther Summerson, a ward of John Jarndyce, as she navigates her romantic coming-of-age. In classic Dickensian fashion, the story gradually uncovers long-buried secrets, all set against the murky and oppressive atmosphere of the Court of Chancery.

Blending elements of romance, mystery, comedy, and satire, Bleak House poignantly illustrates the suffering brought on by the complex inefficiencies of the legal system.
