Anne of Green Gables

Author: L. M. Montgomery

Synopsis:

“Anne of Green Gables,” a novel written in 1908 by Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery (published as L. M. Montgomery), is a timeless story beloved by readers of all ages. Though it has been regarded as a children’s novel since the mid-twentieth century, its appeal extends far beyond that.

The story follows the adventures of Anne Shirley, an imaginative and spirited 11-year-old orphan girl who is mistakenly sent to live with Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, a middle-aged brother and sister who had intended to adopt a boy to help on their farm in the fictional town of Avonlea, located on Prince Edward Island. The novel explores how Anne navigates life with the Cuthberts, at school, and within the broader community.

Since its publication, “Anne of Green Gables” has sold over 50 million copies and been translated into 20 languages. Montgomery wrote numerous sequels to the original book, and after her death, another sequel, as well as an authorized prequel, were published. Today, the original novel is taught to students around the world, continuing to inspire and captivate readers of all ages.
